An old Lugburz Story - The Devil as Carnival-guest Candidate

The Devil as Carnival-guest Candidate In Oorbeek there lived a farmer whose daughter was so attractive, all people stood watching when she walked by. The farmer was so scared his daughter would go wrong that he wouldn't let her go out, or even work alone on the fields. She only left the house accompanied by the farmer or his wife. When the carnival came to town, her father forbade her to go. She got angry, you know how it is when you're young, and she said: "I shall go to the carnival, even if the Devil Himself had to take me." That night she was sitting in her room, pondering how to get to the carnival, as the farmer had locked her up. Suddenly there came a silent rapping on her window, and someone asked her whether she would join him to the carnival. At first, the girl was pleased, but when she took a good look at the man, she saw his eyes looked Chinese, and from under his coat, there appeared a tail. She understood that it was the Devil, because she remembered what she had said. She got very frightened and shouted: "God help me!" And all of a sudden the Devil disappeared and her room reeked of sulphur and tar. Original Translation by DeathKnight of Lugburz The Dark Towers of Lugburz
